[National Assembly] The only member of the Incheon Special Committee, Bae Jun-young, says "Regardless of party affiliation, we must realise the number of local councillors in Incheon"

Among the members of the National Assembly from Incheon, Bae Jun-young of the People Power Party (Jung-gu, Ganghwa, Ongjin-gun) is the only one affiliated with the Special Committee on Political Reform and is currently preparing a proposal for the calculation of the number of councillors based on the maximum range permitted by the Public Official Election Act.

The key point is to recognise the four basic local governments, including the newly established Jemulpo District and Yeongjong District, as independent units for the calculation of the number of councillors.

Bae Jun-young argues that exceptions should be recognised considering the unique characteristics of Ongjin-gun, which is a region facing population extinction and is a border and island area. The logic is that, given the extensive area and mobility conditions, independent electoral districts should be maintained to ensure local representation.

Bae stated, “Now is the time for all Incheon National Assembly members, regardless of party affiliation, to come together to realise the number of local councillors,” and added, “I will discuss the issue of the number of basic councillors with the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the Election Commission in connection with the expansion of the number of metropolitan councillors.”
