Among the members of the National Assembly from Incheon, Bae Jun-young of the People Power Party (Jung-gu, Ganghwa, Ongjin-gun) is preparing a proposal for the calculation of the number of councilors using the maximum range allowed by the Public Official Election Act.
The key is to recognize the four basic local governments, including the newly established Jemulpo District and Yeongjong District, as independent units for calculating the number of councilors.
Representative Bae argues that exceptions should be recognized considering the uniqueness of Ongjin-gun, which is a population-declining area and a border/island region. The logic is that independent electoral districts should be maintained to ensure regional representation, given the extensive area and mobility conditions.
Bae stated, “Now is the time for all Incheon National Assembly members, regardless of party affiliation, to come together to realize the number of local councilors,” and added, “I will discuss the issue of increasing the number of metropolitan councilors in connection with the number of basic councilors with the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the Election Commission.”
