“Korean Film and Literature Captivating the World”... Gyeyang Library Humanities Course

Gyeyang Library (Director Hwang Seon-joo) has prepared a special lecture that deeply examines the power of Korean culture, which is causing a global phenomenon, from a humanities perspective.

Gyeyang Library announced on the 20th that it will operate a course titled ‘K-Film and K-Literature Captivating the World’ for citizens from the 16th to the 30th of next month and is recruiting participants. This course is designed to analyse how our culture has come to stand at the centre of world history through the two pillars of film and literature.

The teaching staff will consist of renowned experts in each field. First, Kim Dong-hyun, chairman of the Seoul Independent Film Festival, will give a lecture on the topic ‘How Did Korean Film Become the Centre of the World?’. Chairman Kim is expected to vividly outline the remarkable growth process of Korean cinema and its status in the global cultural market.

Next, writer Kwak Hyo-hwan will take over with the topic ‘Korean Literature as World Literature, Korean Literature Read Together by the World’. Writer Kwak plans to illuminate the journey of the globalisation of Korean literature and share with citizens the humanities implications of the achievements of Korean literature, including the recent Nobel Prize in Literature award.

Director Hwang Seon-joo of Gyeyang Library stated, “This course will be a time to confirm the humanities values contained not only in the glamorous appearance of K-Culture but also in its underlying aspects,” adding, “I hope many citizens will have the opportunity to enhance their pride in our culture and broaden their humanities knowledge.”
