The People Power Party is reported to have appointed re-elected Member of Parliament Jo Jeong-hoon as the Chair of the Talent Recruitment Committee ahead of the local elections in June. Regarding the appointment of the Candidate Management Chair, there are discussions about breaking with tradition and selecting an external figure.

According to political circles on the 2nd, the People Power Party is likely to hold a Supreme Council meeting soon to officially announce the appointment of the Talent Recruitment Committee Chair. There is strong speculation about Jo's appointment both inside and outside the party.

Jo is a re-elected member representing the metropolitan area and is regarded as a figure who has proven competitiveness in challenging districts within the People Power Party. With a background from the World Bank, he is seen as a suitable candidate in terms of policy capability and expansion of influence in international and economic fields.

The party leadership has been looking for a person who can target the centrist and metropolitan voter base as the Talent Recruitment Committee Chair ahead of the local elections. It is explained that Jo, being from the metropolitan area and a policy expert, naturally made it onto the candidate list. Once the appointment of the Talent Recruitment Committee Chair is confirmed, they will take on the role of a 'headhunter' overseeing the discovery of candidates for the local elections.

In addition, the People Power Party plans to finalise the appointment of the Candidate Management Chair as early as this week. As Representative Jang Dong-hyuk has publicly emphasised 'candidate innovation', there is also speculation that an external figure who can symbolise personnel renewal may be unexpectedly appointed as the Candidate Management Chair.

However, the Candidate Management Chair for local elections has mostly been held by incumbent members of Parliament. Due to the nature of local elections, where many individuals run for office, a person who understands the internal party situation and local organisations is deemed necessary. In fact, during the 2014 local elections, then Secretary-General Hong Moon-jong held the position, in 2018, Secretary-General Hong Moon-pyo took on the role, and in 2022, Member of Parliament Jeong Jin-seok performed this role.

Within the party leadership, there are also considerable opinions suggesting that an incumbent member should be appointed this time, considering the stability and management efficiency of the candidate selection process. For this reason, discussions in the Supreme Council regarding the appointment of the Candidate Management Chair may continue for some time.

By consecutively reorganising the Talent Recruitment Committee Chair and the Candidate Management Chair, the People Power Party will transition into a full-fledged local election system. Representative Jang plans to travel nationwide to support candidates following the launch of election-related organisations, and the party aims to finalise a new party name before the Lunar New Year holiday.
