‘3rd Term Council Chair’ Ian Ho Announces Candidacy for Incheon City Council… “I Will Be a Strong Support for Michuhol Residents”

Ian Ho, the former Chair of Incheon Michuhol District Council, has officially declared his candidacy for Incheon City Council in the upcoming June 3 local elections (the 9th nationwide simultaneous local elections). He aims to leverage the administrative expertise he has built during his three terms as a basic council member to participate in city governance and drive local development.

The former chair recently announced through his Facebook that he has submitted the application documents for the preliminary candidate qualification review of the Democratic Party. In his statement of candidacy, he emphasised, “I will walk steadily and step by step,” and “I will be a strong support for our neighbours with honesty that does not lose its original intention.”

Having served as the first female chair in the history of Michuhol District Council, the former chair has been regarded as a significant figure both within and outside the party, having also served as the Chair of the Women’s Committee of the Incheon City Party of the Democratic Party. Notably, he was mentioned as a strong candidate for city council in the last local elections but declared he would not run, stating, “I will pave the way for my juniors,” which drew attention in the local political scene.

The Michuhol District 3rd electoral district (Sungui 1·3-dong, Sungui 2·4-dong, Yonghyeon 1·4-dong, Yonghyeon 2·3-dong, Hakik 2-dong) where the former chair has thrown down the gauntlet is currently classified as a so-called ‘vacant land’ in the local political arena. This is because the incumbent city council member Lee Bong-rak, affiliated with the People Power Party, has already announced his retirement from politics and will not run in the next election. Consequently, there is keen interest in how the former chair’s high recognition and experience as a three-term district council member will influence the early dynamics of the election.

The former chair is a local native who graduated from Yonghyeon Elementary School, Park Mun Girls' Middle School, and Yeonghwa Girls' High School. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Youth Education from Korea National Open University and a master’s degree in General Administration and Crisis Management from Incheon University’s Graduate School of Policy. He is also a welfare expert with qualifications as a social worker and childcare teacher. The synergy created by the field sense and policy capabilities he has accumulated through his three terms as a district council member is expected to be a key point of observation in this election.
